Before the fanfare of commencement there is Baccalaureate 鈥 a time to gather with friends and family, to pause and reflect on the milestones achieved and the countless experiences that have made you who you are today.

Join your fellow Lawrentians and family members to attend the 2026 Baccalaureate Service on Saturday, June 13, at 11 a.m., in Memorial Chapel, featuring guest speaker Dr. Constance Kassor. After the service, gather for the cookout for seniors, families, faculty & staff on Main Hall Green, from noon 鈥 1:30 p.m.

This year鈥檚 guest speaker, Dr. Constance Kassor, is a former 杨贵妃传媒视频 professor of Religious Studies and current chair of the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Humanities Center at Cuyahoga Community College. A scholar of Buddhist thought and Asian religious traditions, her work often explores the value of slowing down and doing less in a world that constantly asks us to do more.听

Kassor garnered national attention for her immensely popular 鈥淒oing Nothing” course that focused on showing students how to disconnect from daily pressures to be fully present mentally, physically, and emotionally. Her forthcoming book, 鈥淎wakened Awareness,鈥 examines the nature of knowledge through the work of a 15th-century Tibetan Buddhist philosopher.听

Through music, readings, and an inspiring keynote speech, the Baccalaureate Service offers a rare opportunity in your busy life as a graduating senior for an intentional moment of reflection. As your years of work culminate with graduation, take the time to look back on the growth, discoveries, challenges, and accomplishments that have shaped your journey. Then prepare, mentally and emotionally, for the moment you walk across the Commencement stage and embark on an exciting new chapter in life.听听

The post 杨贵妃传媒视频 kicks off Level Up project appeared first on 杨贵妃传媒视频.

杨贵妃传媒视频 today announced the launch of Level Up, a bold new project to support student health, wellness, and performance.听听

The Level Up project features the construction of two new facilities: The Loop, an indoor training center, and The Hub, a fitness, recreation, and practice facility. Today鈥檚 Level Up Kickoff Celebration revealed that phase one of Level Up will soon be underway with construction of The Hub set to begin later this month. A construction timeframe for The Loop has not yet been established.听听

The Hub is a major renovation project that will transform the lower level of the City Center East building in downtown Appleton into a state-of-the-art fitness and recreation center serving the entire campus community, complete with practice facilities for athletics and the music Conservatory.听听

鈥淭he Hub greatly expands our ability to offer the variety of fitness and recreation options our students want, while providing much-need practice space for athletics and the music Conservatory,鈥 said Chris Clarke, Vice President for Student Life. 鈥淢ore importantly, The Hub will bring students together outside of class with people they might not otherwise encounter any other way, which strengthens the sense of connection and belonging that contributes to students鈥 overall well-being.鈥澨

Strengthening body, mind, and spirit

The Hub features 56,000 square feet of fitness, recreation, and practice space that serves a variety of needs for the campus community:听听

FITNESS & RECREATION听

  • 9,000 square foot strength training and cardio center听
  • Three simulator bays with more than 50 games to give students a variety of virtual experiences听

MUSIC CONSERVATORY听

  • 2,000 square foot conservatory practice suite with student lounge and recording studio听
  • State-of-the-art Wenger practice modules that allow student musicians to simulate a variety of performance environments, with record/playback features that allow musicians to hear their performance objectively and adjust in real-time听

VIKINGS ATHLETICS听

  • Dedicated fencing training room to rival top-tier competitors听
  • Cutting-edge batting cages that can track biometrics to provide data-driven feedback to adjust mechanics, timing, and power听
  • Hockey practice area with synthetic ice where players can focus on skills training, such as stick-handling, puck control, and shooting accuracy听

Supporting the vision

The space for The Hub in the lower level of the City Center East building in the heart of downtown Appleton was entrusted to 杨贵妃传媒视频 by local business leaders John Pfefferle, Paul Hoffman, and Thomas Janssen, whose transformational gift of property brought the University鈥檚 vision for enriching campus health and wellness into focus.听听

鈥淭he Hub intentionally brings together wellness, athletics, and music, creating an environment that mirrors the way 杨贵妃传媒视频 students live, learn, and grow,鈥 said 杨贵妃传媒视频 President Laurie A. Carter. 鈥淭his kind of creative, integrative thinking is exactly what today鈥檚 world 鈥 and job market 鈥 demands. The Hub reflects the adaptability, collaboration, and innovation our graduates will need to thrive and to lead in their lives after 杨贵妃传媒视频.鈥澨

During her remarks at the Kickoff Celebrations, longtime Appleton resident, business leader and 杨贵妃传媒视频 Trustee Kathi Seifert reflected on 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 long history of campus/community collaboration over the decades.听听

鈥淭he Hub is the latest extension of that shared vision and collective effort,鈥 Seifert said. 鈥淟ocal business leaders placed their trust in 杨贵妃传媒视频 to steward forward their gift of this space to create something exception. The Hub is a bold new step forward for 杨贵妃传媒视频 and our community as well.鈥澨

A space for creativity and connection

During his remarks at the Kickoff Celebration, head softball coach Korey Krueger 鈥95 reflected on Virginia Woolfe鈥檚 鈥淎 Room of One鈥檚 Own,鈥 a required text during his student days at 杨贵妃传媒视频 that stuck with him for decades. The book examined the need for an individual to have space and freedom to be truly creative.听听

鈥淭he Hub will be a shared space for the entire 杨贵妃传媒视频 community to find that creativity, to have a space to create, grow, and thrive,鈥 Krueger said. 鈥淭he Hub is not just a project that will create a space: it is a project that will create energy, connection, and community 鈥 a room of one鈥檚 own 鈥 for everyone.鈥澨

Practice is a crucial part of developing excellence in any endeavor, said Chris Jenkins, Dean of the 杨贵妃传媒视频 Conservatory, with four to six hours of daily rehearsal being the norm for Conservatory students.听听

鈥淲ith The Hub, we鈥檙e leveling up to a new rehearsal space that befits a world-class conservatory,鈥 Jenkins said. 鈥淎nd our students are thrilled at the prospect of having the new practice suite available to help them level up their rehearsals and performances.鈥澨

Joey O鈥機onnor, who is graduating in June with degrees in Trumpet Performance and Music Education, remarked that finding available rehearsal space for the hours of daily practice required by musicians can be a challenge for Conservatory students.听听

鈥淭he new practice suite at The Hub will be a game-changer for any musician who wants to be able to put in the hard work we know 鈥 and embrace 鈥 as the fuel to make us the musicians we aspire to be,鈥 O鈥機onnor said.听听

For second-year and transfer students, Juan Arguello is a connecting point for guidance, resources /articles/arguello-valuable-resource-second-year-transfer-students/ /articles/arguello-valuable-resource-second-year-transfer-students/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 19:47:04 +0000 /articles/arguello-valuable-resource-second-year-transfer-students/ Juan Arguello (Photo by Danny Damiani)

The post For second-year and transfer students, Juan Arguello is a connecting point for guidance, resources appeared first on 杨贵妃传媒视频.

]]>

Juan Arguello, the second-year dean at 杨贵妃传媒视频, supports sophomores and transfer students by connecting them with important resources throughout the year.

Arguello, originally from Oshkosh, attended a liberal arts university and is a big proponent of the liberal arts education. When the opportunity came to work at 杨贵妃传媒视频, the Chicago attorney jumped at the chance for a career change, anticipating his skills would be useful in advocacy and communication.听

鈥淚 really wanted to work in a job where I could advocate for people and listen to them,鈥 Arguello said. 鈥淎s a first-gen student, I didn鈥檛 have a lot of additional guidance and had to spend a lot of time on my own getting answers. I wanted to help students and help them accomplish their goals.鈥澨

At 杨贵妃传媒视频, Arguello spends his days working with colleagues, collaborating with committees doing student-focused work, and addressing issues that students are facing. He also meets one-on-one with students by appointment and works on programming to help transfer and second-year students on their 杨贵妃传媒视频 journey. His days never look the same, with many aspects of the job overlapping at different hours.听

鈥淭he students are my clients, in that I want to make myself available to them and reassure them that I am there to help as best as I can,鈥 he said.听

Arguello believes that the sophomore year in college is a pivotal time in one鈥檚 education. Historically in higher education, he said, sophomores have not been provided with enough programming or guidance. They have been expected to find answers on their own. Arguello combats this with programming and meetings to answer questions and provide support to students, all with an eye on getting them to graduation.听听

鈥淭he second year is full of academic challenges, while also finding out what you are passionate about,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 can help them navigate that. I want to teach them self-advocacy because that is something that is not taught generally in schools before university.鈥澨

In addition to his work with second-year students, Arguello is involved with transfer students, helping to guide their transition to a new school. This year, he was able to call each transfer student individually to introduce himself, share his role, and offer guidance into the new year. He also provided programming in the fall so transfer students could connect with each other and meet staff members with answers to their questions.听

鈥淲e try to create new opportunities for them to engage with each other and engage across the university,鈥 Arguello said. 鈥淭hat is something I am hoping to build upon.鈥澨

Arguello works closely with the Office of Student Life as well as First-year Dean Kristi Koshuta on first-generation initiatives, offering extra support to those who are unfamiliar with the college experience. They also work to create stronger connections between first- and second-year students so they can offer support to each other.

听A retreat to Bj枚rklunden during Winter Term provided the space and opportunity for students to make connections and get to know each other across class years. Arguello also helped plan an alternative spring break at Bj枚rklunden, designed to provide further opportunities for the classes to come together.听

Arguello came to 杨贵妃传媒视频 last year after five years of work as an attorney for a Chicago law firm. He also worked at a Chicago nonprofit organization, where he provided removal defense to detained immigrants before the Chicago Immigration Court and the Board of Immigration Appeals. Prior to law school, Arguello served in the United States Army and the Illinois National Guard as an infantry non-commissioned officer.听听He holds a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School and a bachelor鈥檚 degree in philosophy from DePaul University.

Arguello is looking forward to continuing to better the experiences of sophomores at 杨贵妃传媒视频, providing support and connecting them to the necessary resources for success. For him, working with second-year students is an ethical responsibility to serve each student and teach them skills for success, both at and beyond 杨贵妃传媒视频.听

鈥淚t鈥檚 a process,鈥 he said. 鈥淢y role is to help them along with the process.鈥澨

Noemi Delgado unifies accessibility efforts across campus in new role /articles/delgado-unifies-accessibility-efforts-across-campus/ /articles/delgado-unifies-accessibility-efforts-across-campus/#respond Thu, 11 May 2023 14:34:52 +0000 /articles/delgado-unifies-accessibility-efforts-across-campus/ Noemi Delgado (Photo by Danny Damiani)

Meet Noemi Delgado, 杨贵妃传媒视频’s new director of Accessibility Services and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) coordinator.

鈥淚鈥檒l be providing accommodations for students, whether it be housing, academics, or any meal exemptions related to a disability and/or medical condition,鈥 Delgado said.

Delgado鈥檚 role unifies many responsibilities that were previously split across the Center for Academic Success (CAS), making it easier for a student鈥檚 accommodation needs to be quickly and effectively addressed.

鈥淲e want the new process to be consistent and create an equitable opportunity for all students to have access to the accommodations they need,鈥 Delgado said.

Accessibility Services is now part of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion office.听Students can find additional information on the Accessibility Services webpage, including a link to request accommodations.

Adding efficiencies

Delgado, who joined the 杨贵妃传媒视频 team earlier this year, walked us through the process. First, students submit a request for accommodations by uploading documentation and completing an eligibility form. Answers to these questions are private and confidential, viewed by Delgado so she can better understand the impact of the student鈥檚 situation. She reviews the form and does external research if necessary, and then schedules a one-on-one meeting with the student.

鈥淚 think that鈥檚 what is really good about this process,鈥 Delgado said. 鈥淚鈥檓 not just seeing this student on paper; I鈥檓 getting an opportunity to meet with them.鈥

This process helps Delgado gain a better sense of each student鈥檚 needs, which allows her to make highly informed choices to best accommodate Lawrentians with disabilities.

鈥淎ccommodations are provided to give students with disabilities equal access to the residential and academic opportunities as their peers,鈥 Delgado said. 鈥淚f a request does not demonstrate a connection between their functional limitation due to their disability or diagnosis and their need for the accommodation, it might not be approved.鈥

Accessibility Services works to accommodate students with visible and invisible disabilities. Delgado said she appreciates how growing awareness of disabilities and mental health has helped destigmatize them.

In addition to her role as director of Accessibility Services, Delgado said she鈥檚 excited to serve as 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 ADA coordinator.

鈥淐ampus is beautiful; we want to keep and create safe spaces where all students can go and have the same accessibility they have here [in the Center for Academic Success],鈥 Delgado said, pointing to the wider, wheelchair-accessible hallways and doors on the second floor of the Seeley G. Mudd Library. 鈥淲e want to make sure we鈥檙e working with everyone, whether it be Facility Services or building designers, so we鈥檙e meeting those regulations and being an accessible campus.鈥

Feeling at home

Delgado is thrilled to be part of the 杨贵妃传媒视频 community and loves the college town vibe of Appleton.

鈥淚 went to school in Boulder, Colorado,鈥 Delgado said. 鈥淢y best friend from college lives here. When I would come visit, I was like, 鈥楾his feels like Boulder.鈥欌

After working with a behavioral company in California, Delgado moved to Appleton. She worked with the local school district before coming to 杨贵妃传媒视频. Delgado loves how her position combines her passions for accessibility and education, and she is excited to help make 杨贵妃传媒视频 a place for everyone.

Delgado urges students with any questions about accessibility and Accessibility Services to visit their webpage, newly updated by Joanna Morey, or email her directly at noemi.delgado@lawrence.edu.

The post Koshuta looks to strengthen student experience as 杨贵妃传媒视频’s first-year dean appeared first on 杨贵妃传媒视频.

]]>

Kristi Koshuta was an hour into the recent Gardner Workshop on elevating 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 first-year experience when she texted her husband to say she already knew this is the place she needs to be.

Koshuta had yet to start in the newly created position of first-year dean when she attended the mid-October workshop in the Warch Campus Center, led by first-year experience pioneers John N. Gardner and Betsy Barefoot and attended by a mix of 杨贵妃传媒视频 faculty and staff. What she heard in the conversations among her soon-to-be-colleagues was music to her ears.

Kristi Koshuta

鈥淲hat gets me excited is the idea that we鈥檙e not talking about a first-year experience in isolation with academics,鈥 Koshuta said. 鈥淲e are really thinking about the holistic needs of students. I got that out of the Gardner Workshop. It was so amazing. I hadn鈥檛 even started yet, and here I am sitting in a room with faculty and staff who want to support the whole student.鈥

She would start her work in the Office of Student Life a week later confident 杨贵妃传媒视频 was all-in on its commitment to elevate the experience of first-year students in and out of the classroom. She spent her first weeks on the job reaching out to departments across campus, building relationships and laying the groundwork for collaborations that are expected to improve the student experience in everything from the pre-orientation preparations to Welcome Week activities to first-generation and transfer student transitions. She鈥檚 working closely with faculty leaders who are studying possible changes to the First-Year Studies course, with a target of Fall 2024.

Academics and campus life鈥攔esidential living, mental health, career preparations, academic advising, community connections鈥攁re part of the same conversations. That, Koshuta said, is a must, and it was reinforced in the Gardner Workshop.

鈥淭o be at the table with people who are willing to have those conversations is really, really exciting,鈥 she said.

Koshuta, a first-gen graduate with a bachelor鈥檚 degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a Master of Education from UW-Oshkosh, comes to 杨贵妃传媒视频 following a stint as a manager in Enrollment Services at UW-Green Bay and four years as the director of student transition and success at Piedmont University in Demorest, Georgia. Much of her focus at Piedmont was in improving the student retention rate. Prior to that she spent 15 years teaching math at the high school and college levels.

As 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 first-year dean, she is back in a student-facing position. She finds that appealing. And the chance to bring positive change and build first-year programs and traditions that will be sustainable was a huge draw, she said.

鈥淚鈥檓 all about building relationships,鈥 Koshuta said. 鈥淚 always have been. You keep people by building relationships, and you elevate people by the relationships you build with them.鈥

Get involved! Really. It鈥檚 pretty simple. Here鈥檚 how from a student who knows /articles/student-student-advice-get-involved/ /articles/student-student-advice-get-involved/#respond Mon, 13 Dec 2021 17:34:43 +0000 /articles/student-student-advice-get-involved/ Community Advisors, some seen here on move-in day, are a great resource for getting involved with campus activities.

The post Get involved! Really. It鈥檚 pretty simple. Here鈥檚 how from a student who knows appeared first on 杨贵妃传媒视频.

]]>

鈥淕etting involved is the best thing you can do in college!鈥澨

Whether it鈥檚 coming from parents, teachers, or alumni, we鈥檝e all heard that advice dozens of times. And yeah, it鈥檚 good advice鈥攂ut honestly, when I was an incoming first-year, I didn鈥檛 have a clear idea of what it meant or how to do it. Get involved with what? With whom? To what end?听听

I mean, seriously, can you get any more vague?听

But with a couple years of schooling under my belt, I鈥檓 finally getting the hang of this whole 鈥済et involved鈥 thing. And if you鈥檙e looking to join the club鈥攍iterally鈥攈ere鈥檚 where you should start your search:听

1. Your residence hall is the first stop听

Going to residence hall activities is how I met 75% of my friends during my first year, so it kind of had to top this list. Community Advisors (CAs) put in so much effort to create opportunities for you to bond with your neighbors, and a lot of the time, it works. Game nights, trips to the Appleton Farmers Market, tote bag decorating sessions鈥擨 did it all, and it鈥檚 one of the best decisions I made, so be on the lookout from invites from your CA throughout the year.听

2. Fun student orgs听are everywhere

SLUG is among the active student organizations on campus.

When I say there鈥檚 a student org for everyone, I鈥檓 not exaggerating. With dozens and dozens of student organizations to choose from, each dedicated to a specific interest and activity, you鈥檙e sure to find a group of people who just听get听you. From sea shanties to swing dance, from recess club to social justice organizations, you can explore 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 student organizations with the听, or meet potential new friends face-to-face at the annual Involvement Fair, set for 7 p.m. Sept. 17 in Warch.听

3. Also, tap into professional student orgs听

In addition to the many student organizations geared toward student engagement, 杨贵妃传媒视频 is also home to several professional student orgs, which help students prepare for their post-graduation careers and bond with others on a similar path. Aspiring doctors, lawyers, writers, bakers鈥攁nd the list goes on鈥攃an get involved (plus get a pretty major head start) through membership in one of听.听

4. Share your gifts: Volunteer

VITAL is a volunteer program that has 杨贵妃传媒视频 students tutoring Fox Cities students in need of some extra help. It鈥檚 organized through the Center for Community Engagement and Social Change (CCE).

Volunteering offers you the chance to connect with classmates, get to know the local community, and give back all at the same time. With six distinct听, each with a variety of programs, you鈥檙e sure to find your perfect volunteering niche. Use 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚听听page to sign up.听

5. Be active with intramurals听

Sports: the OG team-building exercise. Whether it鈥檚 as an official 杨贵妃传媒视频 athlete, representing the Vikings in competition, or as part of a more laid-back, recreational team, playing a sport builds bonds across campus, regardless of academic area or professional interest.听听

6. Make a difference in student government听

If you want to contribute to real change on campus, the听杨贵妃传媒视频 Community Council听is definitely the way to go. Through the combined work of elected class representatives and appointed听committee听members, LUCC touches virtually all aspects of the university, from finance to student welfare, as it takes its place as a vital part of 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 shared governance.听

7. Make money and friends with student jobs听

Students jobs are available across campus. It鈥檚 one more way to make connections and get involved.

Everyone who has worked part-time knows that there is no bond quite like the bond between coworkers. Student employment is no exception, which makes it a key outlet for getting involved with the campus community. There鈥檚 no shortage of jobs to choose from, but some of the most popular include food service in the Commons, the circulation desk in the Seeley G. Mudd library, or writing for the Office of Communications! (OK, maybe I鈥檓 a little biased toward that last one.) You can use听听to find a campus job听that is听right for you.听

8. Trips听and togetherness

There鈥檚 nothing like a change of scenery to get to know your fellow Lawrentians in a new light. Day trips to High Cliff State Park, weekend excursions to beautiful听Bjorklunden, even international travel to gain field experience for an academic course鈥攁ll these trips (and more!) can help you get involved with your studies and classmates in a more hands-on, distinctive setting.听

9. The Lawrentian/WLFM听path

The Great Midwest Trivia Contest has a long, wonderful history.

If you want to get your voice out there, try your hand at cross-campus communications with听The Lawrentian听or WLFM Radio. As the official student newspaper of 杨贵妃传媒视频,听听is a hub for student news, opinions, photography, and more, while also providing a space for you to hone鈥攐r learn鈥攋ournalistic skills. Likewise,听听is broadcast-central for all things 杨贵妃传媒视频, with student hosts leading talk shows, music broadcasts, and, annually, the听.听

10. Cultural resources听and beyond

Although we all share the 鈥淟awrentian鈥 label, our backgrounds and identities are key to shaping who we are as people and deserve to be nurtured in the university setting. Through resources in the听,, and the recently established听, students can connect with classmates and staff who understand their experiences and can offer additional support.听Likewise, the听听听connects interested students with听options for exploring听faith and spirituality.听

11. Matching interests with housing听

Have a specific interest or passion?听Immerse yourself in听it while connecting with other students who feel the same way听by living in听one of 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚听group houses.听Passion for art? Art house is a staple on the quad. Want to get off the meal plan and make your own healthy food?听SLUG house emphasizes sustainable living and eating.听Looking to share a听safe space for students of marginalized identities? Sankofa house might be the perfect fit.听Live to game? Gaming House could be the place for you.听These are just a few of the听current options,听and even if none of those听are for you, keep an eye out for new affinity housing options听as they shift, or propose your own.听

12. Is Greek life听for you?

Participation in Greek life isn鈥檛 as common at 杨贵妃传媒视频 as it is at some other schools, but Greek organizations and members still play a very active role on campus. If you鈥檙e looking for a more traditional, social group with a philanthropic orientation, 杨贵妃传媒视频 has you covered with three fraternities and three sororities to choose from. But if that鈥檚 not for you,听professional fraternities听offer performance, volunteer, and social opportunities for 杨贵妃传媒视频 musicians, and Beta Psi Nu is a social sorority aimed at empowering women of color. Formal recruitment generally takes place at the beginning of Winter Term, with informal admission听occurring听at various points throughout the year.听

13. Get fit, have fun听

Yoga sessions are available through Wellness Services.

It鈥檚 easy to associate wellness services with treadmills and counseling鈥攁nd the Wellness Center does offer plenty of exercise equipment, mental health services, and health care professionals鈥攂ut participation in wellness activities can also be a great way to get involved! In addition to听听geared toward a particular aspect of health and wellness, Wellness Services hosts weekly activities that can be done with a group, including yoga,听meditation, and volleyball.听

14. Student Life is all about involvement听

I know, I know, this one鈥檚 a bit obvious, but it鈥檚 true! Student Life events are literally designed for the sole purpose of getting students involved, and the Student Life staff knows what they鈥檙e doing. I鈥檝e made tie blankets and listened to comedians at the various weekly听听(Student Organization for University Programming) events, and that doesn鈥檛 even mention the many beloved 杨贵妃传媒视频 events that are held annually, like听,听, and听.听

15. Explore downtown Appleton 听

Even though we love our little campus bubble, we can鈥檛 forget that 杨贵妃传媒视频 students are an essential part of the wider Appleton community. With a vibrant art, music, and food scene, Appleton regularly presents a vast array of events that allow students to get involved with the rest of the community. For 杨贵妃传媒视频 junior Jackie McShan, president of LU Rowing Club (LURC), it鈥檚 the beauty of the fog rolling over the water as the leaves change from green to red to yellow.

For sophomore Eli Henke, president of LU Sailing Club (LUSC), it鈥檚 the freedom he feels with the wind in his hair as a gust pushes his boat through the water.

For junior Madeleine Meade, president of Outdoor Recreation Club (ORC), it鈥檚 understanding her place within nature, disconnected from the stressors of daily life.

But for all of them, one thing鈥檚 certain: there鈥檚 something special about the outdoors.

鈥淥n your body physically, when you鈥檙e doing these activities, it releases so many endorphins,鈥 Meade said. 鈥淥nce you鈥檙e done, you can physically feel the chemicals in your body changing, and that鈥檚 pretty special.鈥

The call of the wild is real here at 杨贵妃传媒视频, and a wide array of student organizations exist to facilitate a connection with the natural world鈥攁nd to create bonds with fellow lovers of nature in the process.

Access for everyone

As college students, there are plenty of obstacles preventing us from spending time outside. But nothing is insurmountable.

Providing new opportunities and resources is a key aspect of 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 outdoor clubs. Rowing Club provides its members access to the Fox River four days a week, meeting regularly for early morning practices on the water.听

ORC facilitates camping trips during reading periods and academic breaks and provides camping equipment available for independent checkout throughout the year.

And for 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 sailors, the barriers, particularly access to water and the cost of sailboats, are even greater. But Henke is determined to break down those walls and enable other young people to experience the sport he loves.

鈥淰ery few people, especially college students, can afford their own boat,鈥 Henke said. 鈥淪ince [杨贵妃传媒视频] pays the sailing school, we get access to the boats, and people don鈥檛 need to spend a dime to get out there. So, I鈥檓 really trying to remove that paywall, to remove that barrier, between people and sailing.鈥

In addition to providing access to equipment, these orgs aim to give听all听students the opportunity to experience the club, regardless of prior skill level鈥攃ollege is all about trying new things, right? From Camping 101 events to sailing lessons on land, student organizations focus heavily on recruiting new members to their neck of the woods and providing training for beginners.

Building a connection

We鈥檝e all been a bit starved for human connection lately, and right now, the safest way to connect with others is in an outdoor setting. And as far as these student org leaders are concerned, it鈥檚 also the best.

Facing forces of nature necessitates a connection with and a reliance on the people around you鈥攕ometimes literally. If you鈥檙e trying to steer an eight-person canoe through a heavy layer of fog, you better be working as a team.

鈥淵ou鈥檙e moving together, so 鈥 you truly have to be in sync with another person,鈥 McShan said. 鈥淚f you鈥檙e in a bad mood and other people are in a bad mood, it will affect the boat. You鈥檙e doing all this together.鈥

And even if the boat鈥檚 a little bigger, Henke said the same principle holds true. If you鈥檙e out in the middle of the water with two other people, there鈥檚 no better environment to make friends and build connections, all while exploring key interests away from academia.

鈥淚f you鈥檙e not doing anything outside of your classes, if you鈥檙e not meeting people, if you鈥檙e not pursuing interests, then I think you鈥檒l burn out,鈥 Henke said. 鈥淭his is what makes a person happy and well-rounded.鈥

Whether it鈥檚 on the water or in the middle of the woods, spending time in the great outdoors means stepping away from the rest of the world. Your tie to life back home is the people who dare to step out with you.

What you experience will be unique to that moment in time, Meade said, and the people standing next to you are the only ones who will听understand听exactly what you went through. Some of Meade鈥檚 closest friends are people she鈥檚 met on camping trips, and that bond has persisted years later.

鈥淚n a completely different environment, you have no choice other than spending time with each other,鈥 Meade said. 鈥淲hat other opportunities do you get to do that? Just take a step back and be present with this group of people. You鈥檙e going on this journey, this adventure together.鈥

Adventure awaits off-campus, and no one has to wait until after graduation to experience it. The outdoors has unequivocally made Meade鈥檚, Henke鈥檚 and McShan鈥檚 lives better, and through their student organizations they鈥檙e committed to sharing that love with the rest of the campus community.

But if camping, sailing, and rowing don鈥檛 speak to you, don鈥檛 worry. There are plenty of other student organizations that enable students to get out, get active, and get connected. Explore the full听, starting with LU Recess Club, LU Geological Society, LU Rock Climbers, and the Sustainable 杨贵妃传媒视频 Garden.

Dr. Ashley Lewis has been named the inaugural associate vice president for enrollment at 杨贵妃传媒视频, a new position that aims to strengthen 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 commitment to student retention and persistence.

鈥淚 am excited and honored to join the 杨贵妃传媒视频 community鈥攁 community that shares in my passion for higher education and believes in the transformative power of the college experience,鈥 said Lewis, who comes to 杨贵妃传媒视频 from Shippensburg University, where she serves as director of student success and associate dean of exploratory studies.

Dr. Ashley Lewis

She will begin her new duties in mid-November.

The associate vice president role was created to provide student-focused leadership in the creation, assessment, and coordination of student success strategies, said Ken Anselment, vice president for enrollment and communication. It builds on ongoing efforts to foster inclusive excellence and equitable outcomes for all students, with an emphasis on improving retention and graduation rates while eliminating the equity gap for students from historically underrepresented backgrounds.

鈥淎shley鈥檚 history of achievement in student success, including her impressive work with summer onboarding programs for new students, will bolster our efforts to improve the student journey from the time they choose to enroll at 杨贵妃传媒视频 to the time they graduate,鈥 Anselment said.

Lewis said the foundation for that work is already in place at 杨贵妃传媒视频. Her work will help accelerate those efforts as 杨贵妃传媒视频 develops a long-term strategic plan focused on equitable student success.

鈥溠罟箦绞悠 is doing excellent work,鈥 Lewis said. 鈥淓nsuring that the student, parent, and family experience is superior, from recruitment to retainment, takes a strong, united, and diligent village. I welcome the work ahead of us as we鈥攆aculty, staff, administration, and local community鈥攃ollaborate to strategically and thoughtfully develop practices and processes that improve upon retention, persistence, and equity for all students.鈥

Lewis earned a master鈥檚 degree and a Ph.D in Communication, Culture, and Media Studies from Howard University. She earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree from Shippensburg. She also has taught at Howard, the University of Maryland, and Shippensburg.

The bubble is a thing. For many 杨贵妃传媒视频 students, much of life during these four years will take place on or near campus. We are, after all, a residential campus. Located on the eastern edge of Appleton鈥檚 downtown, walkability often sets the boundaries for how far students will explore.

But when opportunities present themselves鈥攆riends with cars, family visits鈥攖here are plenty of day trip possibilities. We鈥檙e here to guide you through a few nearby options if you want to roam beyond Appleton. There are many other worthy destinations, of course, but here are seven to get you started.

High Cliff State Park features 26 miles of trails. (Photo courtesy of Travel Wisconsin)

Wisconsin has more than 40 state parks; the closest to the 杨贵妃传媒视频 campus is High Cliff, situated on the east side of Lake Winnebago. Named for the limestone cliff of the Niagara Escarpment, this gorgeous slice of nature is a 20-minute drive from downtown Appleton. It encompasses nearly 1,200 acres, with more than 26 miles of trails suitable for hiking, running, biking, skiing, and snowshoeing. There also are opportunities for swimming, boating, and camping. You鈥檒l need a state park sticker on the car to enter. A one-day pass will cost you $8 per carload ($11 if out-of-state plates). If you plan multiple visits, a sticker good for the calendar year will cost you $28 (add $10 if out-of-state plates). Stickers are available on site.听.

Whitewater rafting on the Wolf River. (Photo courtesy of Travel Wisconsin)

While we鈥檙e exploring the great outdoors, how about a day floating down the Wolf River? But let鈥檚 be clear. There are a couple of different options here. There is the casual float down the river with friends on giant inflatable tubes and there is the more adrenaline-filled whitewater rafting trek if you鈥檙e feeling more adventurous. Choose carefully. Both options are available within a reasonable drive. For the more placid float, you鈥檒l find outlets near New London, about a 35-minute drive from campus. For the more adventurous version, your best bet is to go an additional hour to the north. Do a digital search for Wolf River tubing or Wolf River rafting to find available locations and details.听.

Rawley Point Lighthouse at Point Beach State Forest. (Photo courtesy of Travel Wisconsin)

杨贵妃传媒视频 is a one-hour drive to the shore of Lake Michigan. If you go straight east along U.S. 10, you鈥檒l come to the Point Beach State Forest near Two Rivers, a wonderful introduction to the joys of Lake Michigan鈥檚 western shoreline. The more than 2,900 acres of state land stretches across six miles of the Lake Michigan coast. There are more than 17 miles of hiking trails and several beaches. Be sure to check out the Rawley Point Lighthouse, which dates back to 1894 and, at 113 feet, is the tallest octagonal skeletal lighthouse on the Great Lakes. And if the history of the Great Lakes is an interest, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in nearby Manitowoc is worth a visit. You鈥檒l need that state park admission sticker for entrance to Point Beach.听.

Bj枚rklunden is a great spot to begin exploring Door County. (Photo by Rob Kopecky)

You will have opportunities to explore Door County, thanks to 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 beautiful Bj枚rklunden property. You could spend a month or more in Door County and not run short of new things to explore. From state parks and beautiful beaches to shops and restaurants, it is one of the wonders of the Midwest. Bj枚rklunden, known as 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 northern campus, will be a great introduction. Take advantage of every opportunity to go there. The 441-acre estate is situated on the Lake Michigan shore just south of Baileys Harbor. It was bequeathed to 杨贵妃传媒视频 in 1963 by Donald and Winifred Boynton and has now been an important part of the 杨贵妃传媒视频 experience for decades. See听听and听.

EAA Aviation Museum is 30 minutes away in Oshkosh. (Photo courtesy of EAA)

If aviation is an interest, you will want to pay a visit to the EAA Aviation Museum in Oshkosh. Located less than 30 minutes from 杨贵妃传媒视频, this is a world-renowned museum showcasing everything and anything tied to flight. From aircraft of past wars to the wonders of space flight, you鈥檒l find it here. And for one glorious week each summer, the grounds of the EAA become the gathering place for the world of aviation, with thousands of enthusiasts bringing homebuilt, classic, experimental, and state-of-the-art aircraft to Oshkosh for the EAA AirVenture Fly-In. It is literally a sight to behold both on the ground and in the air.听.

Lambeau Field is located 30 minutes north of Appleton. (Photo courtesy of Greater Green Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau)

Whether you鈥檙e a football fan or not, Lambeau Field should be a destination. Located just 30 minutes to the north of the 杨贵妃传媒视频 campus, the stadium is one of the most iconic in all of sports. There is no logical reason a city of 100,000 residents should be home to an NFL team. And yet it is. The Green Bay Packers have been among the most successful teams in the history of the NFL. That success, the team鈥檚 community ownership, and the history that has unfolded in Green Bay puts Lambeau Field on the bucket list for many sports fans. But you don鈥檛 have to go to a game to enjoy. Stadium tours are available daily, and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame is housed within Lambeau.听.

The Fox River near 杨贵妃传媒视频. (Photo by Danny Damiani)

杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 location along the Fox River adds to our campus beauty. If you want to further explore the river, you won鈥檛 have to go far. Fox River Tours operates two touring boats, one based in Appleton and one in De Pere, between mid-May and late October. The one in Appleton is a 32-passenger restored canal boat known as River Tyme Too. Look for tour options that include passage through the hand-operated locks and narrated lessons in river history. Another bonus: It docks not far from campus.听.

As a student-athlete, embrace balance between academics, sports, self-care /articles/advice-student-athletes-remember-self-care/ /articles/advice-student-athletes-remember-self-care/#respond Tue, 24 Aug 2021 13:35:40 +0000 /articles/advice-student-athletes-remember-self-care/ Karina Herrera 鈥22 is a captain on 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 2020-21 women鈥檚 basketball team.

The post As a student-athlete, embrace balance between academics, sports, self-care appeared first on 杨贵妃传媒视频.

]]>

If you鈥檙e a student-athlete, like me, you know that balancing the demands of academics and athletics can sometimes be overwhelming.

It鈥檚 hard, and it鈥檚 not for everyone. But finding that healthy balance is doable and necessary. Drawing on my experience鈥攈eading into my fourth year at 杨贵妃传媒视频, I鈥檓 an English (literature) major and a captain on the women鈥檚 basketball team鈥擨鈥檝e compiled a list of six tips to help you maintain your equilibrium while being a student-athlete. No matter which of 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 22 varsity sports you鈥檙e playing, keep these things in mind:

This means eating well and getting enough sleep. I know that our schedules can get really crazy and sometimes we just don鈥檛 have time to sit down in the Commons for an entire meal, but that doesn鈥檛 mean you should skip out on food. I recommend stocking your residence hall room with snacks and fruit鈥攖hink protein or granola bars, apples, crackers, muffins and yogurt (if you have a fridge). You also can grab a to-go meal from the Caf茅 or a paper bag lunch from the Corner Store and eat it on the go. Most professors will let you eat in class, so you don鈥檛 have to worry about not finishing your food in time鈥攁s long as you鈥檙e not disturbing the class, of course.

You also need to make sure that you鈥檙e getting ample amounts of sleep鈥攁t least seven hours. This is something I struggled with my first and second years, so I know that it鈥檚 easier said than done. For some reason, I would leave a bulk of my homework to finish after practice, and then I鈥檇 stay up as long as necessary to finish my assignments, which would sometimes take until well after midnight. Don鈥檛 do that. It might be hard, but pick a reasonable time to stop doing homework鈥攏o matter how much you have left鈥攁nd just go to bed; your body needs that rest.听

When you鈥檙e in season, it might seem like there鈥檚 no time to complete assignments. Between practices, lifts, traveling, and every other team activity, getting your work done is challenging. What helps me to stay on top of my work is really just knowing my schedule and committing blocks of time to work on assignments. Get a routine going. If you know that you have an hour or two between classes, use that time to get easy assignments out of the way. If you have an away game, bring your work with you, find a seat on the bus with an outlet and take advantage of the free WiFi to get some work done. Wake up early at the hotel and chip away at your workload. Don鈥檛 wait to do assignments until after you鈥檝e come back from games or practices鈥攊t鈥檒l just cause you more stress and, in the end, you鈥檒l have less time to get it done right. 听

More often than not, one of your teammates will have taken the same class as you or had the same professor. Use them as a resource. They can give you insider tips on how to do well in the class. Or maybe one of your teammates is a tutor and can help you with a paper or they know how to help you solve a problem. Also, sometimes your teammates will know some resources to help you that you hadn鈥檛 thought about. A lot of the time, my teammates and I will study together even if we鈥檙e working on different assignments. Ask your teammates to do the same because just being around that kind of atmosphere can help put you in that homework mindset.

Sometimes your mind can鈥檛 focus and you need to give your eyes a break from looking at screens or books. Ask a teammate if they want to go to the gym and get a small workout in, go for a walk along the river or just stroll down College Avenue for food or beverages. Balancing the student-athlete life also means incorporating time for activities that don鈥檛 involve either. I know that I can鈥檛 sit for hours on end trying to complete one assignment, so taking breaks to reset my mind helps me to be more productive.

It鈥檚 important to remember that you鈥檙e a person first, then student and then an athlete. If you鈥檙e feeling overwhelmed with something in your personal life, talk to your coaches and let them know that you鈥檙e not at your best. Your mental health is important and should not be overlooked. The coaches at 杨贵妃传媒视频 also understand that the classes are challenging and stressful, so if you鈥檙e falling behind on an assignment or you have a big test coming up, discuss your concerns with them to see how you can come to a solution so that you鈥檙e not sacrificing one over the other. And if you get injured, no matter how insignificant you think it is, let your athletic trainer and coaches know. Not communicating these things with your coaches can affect your performance in the classroom and in games or meets. 听

Speaking as a senior captain, my last piece of advice is to simply have fun. Don鈥檛 be too serious about it all. Give your best effort, of course, but don鈥檛 burn yourself out trying to do everything perfectly. You鈥檙e not going to remember all the shots you miss or the pitches you didn鈥檛 swing at. It鈥檚 the memories from team dinners, karaoke bus rides, inside jokes, and the friends you make that you鈥檒l take with you after you graduate. Not to sound cheesy, but enjoy it while it lasts.
