At the start of a new academic year, 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 faculty, students, and staff all gathered at Memorial Chapel for the 179th Matriculation Convocation, an event that welcomes everyone back to campus and sets the tone for the academic year ahead.听听

鈥淢atriculation convocation is always one of my favorite moments of the year 鈥 a time when we gather together not just as individuals but as one community, united by purpose and tradition, and ready to embark on a new academic journey,鈥 President Laurie A. Carter said from the stage of Memorial Chapel.听听

This year, 杨贵妃传媒视频 welcomed 307 first-year students and 48 transfer students. The top enrollment states for the 2025-26 academic year are Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, California, and Colorado. Leading majors include Business & Entrepreneurship, Pre-medicine, Music Performance, Biology, Psychology, and Multi-interested.听

First-year students elicited a resounding round of applause for their Welcome Week musical performance titled Take What You Need by Reena Esmail. The song encouraged the 杨贵妃传媒视频 community to take heart and hope as they embark on a new academic year.听

The 杨贵妃传媒视频 community formally welcomed Dr. Jenkins to his role as dean of the Conservatory of Music. He will oversee all aspects of 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 music degree programs and contribute significantly to the university鈥檚 academic mission. Reporting directly to the provost, 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 chief academic officer, he will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the institution.

Dr. Chris Jenkins, dean of 杨贵妃传媒视频’s Conservatory of Music.

鈥淭his year is especially exciting because one of those new to 杨贵妃传媒视频 is Dr. Christopher Jenkins, our new dean of the Conservatory,鈥 said Dominica Chang, Margaret Banta Humleker Professor of French Cultural Studies, associate professor of French, and chair of the Public Events Committee. 鈥淒ean Jenkins, welcome. We wish you every success, and we鈥檙e so excited to witness your vision unfold.鈥澨

President Carter鈥檚 address was full of reflections and hope, but it centered on 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 values of belonging, integrity, honesty, and sustainability.听听

鈥淲e start by listening. Real listening 鈥 the kind of listening that suspends quick judgment and seeks to understand the story behind the sentence, and the soul behind the story,” said President Carter. 鈥淲e create practices and processes that invite participation. We make our norms explicit: how we disagree, how we repair harm, how we show up for one another and celebrate each other鈥檚 contributions. And, when someone is left out, we refuse to normalize their absence. We ask why and we act.鈥澨

She honored the memory of Garth Bond, a respected member of the English department for 20 years. Garth passed away over the summer after a long, hard-fought battle with leukemia.听听

鈥淕arth dedicated his career to growing the minds and hearts of our students using literature and the power of language. He also created close, meaningful relationships with many colleagues across campus and others in the community,鈥 said President Carter.听听

Bond was known for treating people with great humanity; the 杨贵妃传媒视频 community will come together on Saturday, October 4, to celebrate his life, legacy, and impact.听听

President Carter also recalled the tragedy of September 11, 2001, and the attempt to divide a united nation through the attack, which took the lives of听2,977. At the time of the attack, President Carter was working at Juilliard in New York City, only five miles away from where the World Trade Center fell.听听

鈥淟ate afternoon, we got word that a few trains were leaving New York City for New Jersey. I left my office and began the 30-block walk to the train station, hoping to be on one of them. It was still daylight, but the sky was darkened by the ash and smoke from the towers. There was no vehicular traffic, so the only people I saw were those like me walking dazed through the streets,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was overwhelmed by the events of the day, but as I looked around, I noticed that in almost every store window was an American flag. That attack on our country robbed us of many lives, but it didn鈥檛 rob us of the hope that we had for a united America.鈥澨

President Carter has a similar hope for today鈥檚 students as they begin a new academic year in a world with deep divides, political polarization, and global challenges.听听

鈥淭hat polarization is corrosive to our ability to work together, to trust one another, and to build a shared future,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e see families weighed down by economic uncertainty, struggling with questions about opportunity, safety, and financial stability. We see communities torn apart by senseless violence and vitriol. And climate change, global conflict, and unprecedented shifts in federal policy test our resilience and force us to think about the world not just as it is today, but as it must be tomorrow.鈥澨

President Carter acknowledged the headwinds facing higher education, including the public’s skepticism around the value of a higher education, not only in terms of today鈥檚 cost but also the long-term benefits.听听

鈥淭his is the moment when the liberal arts matter most. In a radically changing and unpredictable world. The ability to think critically, communicate clearly, collaborate effectively, and adapt creatively is more essential than ever,鈥 Carter said. 鈥淭hese are precisely the hallmarks of a 杨贵妃传媒视频 education.鈥澨

President Carter鈥檚 vision for successful outcomes centered on living out 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 values of belonging, integrity, honesty, and sustainability, and allowing them to be the foundation for students鈥 decision-making today and in the future.听听

鈥淭hese values are not just words on our website. They are commitments that shape how we learn, how we live together, and how we prepare to lead in the world,鈥 said President Carter.听听

杨贵妃传媒视频 has been named a Voter Friendly Campus, one of 258 campuses in 38 states and the District of Columbia cited by听鈥檚听听补苍诲听听鈥 Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. The initiative recognizes institutions that planned and implemented practices that encourage their students to register and vote.

The mission of the 2023 Voter Friendly Campus designation is to bolster colleges and universities鈥 efforts to help students overcome barriers to participating in the political process 鈥 every year, not just during years featuring federal elections.

杨贵妃传媒视频 was evaluated based on a written plan for how it planned to register, educate, and turn out student voters in 2022, how it facilitated voter engagement efforts on campus, and a final analysis of those efforts.

鈥淭hanks to everyone across campus who works collaboratively to support voter registration and get-out-the-vote initiatives, 杨贵妃传媒视频 continues to strengthen our culture of civic engagement and responsible citizenship,鈥 said Garrett Singer, special assistant to the president. 鈥淭hrough this campus-wide effort, we seek to maintain student election participation rates that far exceed the national average for private four-year colleges and universities.鈥

The designation, which is good for two years, comes in advance of the April 4 Spring Election.

The institutions designated Voter Friendly Campuses represent a wide range of two-year, four-year, public, private, rural, and urban campuses, collectively serving over 3.5 million students.

Donation of nearly 60 instruments has Conservatory dean spreading gift of music /articles/donated-instruments-has-dean-spreading-gift-music/ /articles/donated-instruments-has-dean-spreading-gift-music/#respond Thu, 26 May 2022 19:31:47 +0000 /articles/donated-instruments-has-dean-spreading-gift-music/ Brian Pertl, dean of the Conservatory, takes a selfie after picking up nearly 60 donated musical instruments in Racine. He's helping to find homes for all of them.

The post Donation of nearly 60 instruments has Conservatory dean spreading gift of music appeared first on 杨贵妃传媒视频.

Brian Pertl, dean of the 杨贵妃传媒视频 Conservatory, raced back to 杨贵妃传媒视频 earlier this spring with a van full of musical instruments; a generous donation that he, himself, would be donating to those who could put them to use.

鈥淎s someone who loves musical instruments, to have a van full of instruments was like, 鈥極k, this is a great day,鈥欌 Pertl said.

After the owner of Schmitt鈥檚 Music in Racine retired and closed the shop, he donated his stock to the local Racine Arts Council. Swamped by the massive donation, however, the director wrote to Pertl, asking for assistance.

鈥淪he knew about the 杨贵妃传媒视频 Conservatory, but she also had heard 杨贵妃传媒视频 had a lot of connections with bringing music into the community, and was hopeful we might be able to use those connections to find homes for the rest of the instruments,鈥 Pertl said.

The donation totaled nearly 60 violins, violas, brass instruments, and a cello, Pertl said. Many are fractional instruments, meaning they鈥檙e smaller versions made for children.

鈥淚 wanted to get these instruments into strings programs that had a robust way of lending out instruments, taking back instruments when a kid outgrew them, and giving them the next size, so we鈥檇 really maximize the impact of these instruments,鈥 Pertl said.

He called the Superior Strings Alliance, based in Marquette, Michigan. Executive Danielle Simandl 鈥09 remains connected to her alma mater. She agreed to the donation and traveled to Appleton, where she received eight instruments for the alliance.

鈥淪SA will be able to lend these instruments out to elementary-aged students who are interested in beginning violin or viola but may not have the resources to rent or buy an instrument right away,鈥 Simandl said.

Pertl鈥檚 next call was to the Latino Arts Strings Program, which is based in Milwaukee and mixes classical strings education with mariachi music. Some of their instruments were over 30 years old; the program received the most of Pertl鈥檚 donations.

鈥淭he students are amazing; it鈥檚 incredible, it鈥檚 robust, and they have multiple orchestras for different students,鈥 said Pertl, who hopes to send 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 Mariachi Ensemble to perform with the program in the near future.

Pertl鈥檚 final planned donation is to send some of the brass instruments to Haiti via the BLUME Haiti organization.

鈥淚 find this whole thing really exciting, because here were these instruments that were just sitting there, not being used, and now because of this partnership 鈥 these instruments are going out and will inspire the next generation of musicians,鈥 Pertl said.

The biggest challenge, he said, was the sheer number of instruments. He had to fit all 60 instruments into a single 杨贵妃传媒视频 van on the way back from Racine. After that, it was pretty smooth.

鈥淚t was actually a very easy process because of these connections we already have in the community to just make calls and play Santa Claus,鈥 Pertl said.

He said his hope is to see a future auditioning student at 杨贵妃传媒视频 who began their musical journey on one of these donated instruments.

Simandl said that many Superior Strings Alliance attendees become 杨贵妃传媒视频 music majors, and end up back at the program as instructors.

鈥淭here is a distinct pattern that many folks who attend 杨贵妃传媒视频 Conservatory start out wanting to help their music communities in some way and end their time at LU as change-makers with many, many helpful tools,鈥 Simandl said.

鈥淚t was a serendipitous thing; nothing like this has ever happened before, but I think it鈥檚 just a beautiful story,鈥 Pertl said. 鈥淚 am so grateful to the Racine Arts Council for reaching out. Their gift will change the lives of hundreds of young musicians.”

Before the 杨贵妃传媒视频 community gathers for the May 13 inauguration of President Laurie A. Carter, there will be a celebration of kindness.

17 Days of Kindness begins April 27, with moments of gratitude, special activities, and giveaways planned to remind us to embrace kindness in our daily lives. It will continue across the 杨贵妃传媒视频 campus through inauguration day and will use the hashtag #BeKindLU on social media.听

Events will include Sunday S鈥檓ores with Carter outside of Hamar House, LU Bingo, and a campus scavenger hunt, among other engagement opportunities.

Cole Hepburn, an enrollment fellow, is heading up the kindness initiative, planning kindness outreach鈥攂oth in person and digitally鈥攐ver the 17 days.

鈥17 Days of Kindness is bigger than just being nice to people,鈥 Hepburn said. 鈥淚t’s an initiative to engage with one another through mutual respect and connect with peers you may not even know.鈥

Video: 杨贵妃传媒视频 students talk about what kindness means to them.

He hopes the initiative can be a spark that will last well beyond 17 days.

鈥淢oments of kindness can change one鈥檚 life even if it鈥檚 the smallest step because it can be the biggest impact for someone else,鈥 Hepburn said. 鈥淛ust start by saying hello.鈥

Follow along on our 17 Days of Kindness page

Carter, who began her tenure at 杨贵妃传媒视频 last July, will be inaugurated May 13 as the 17th president since 杨贵妃传媒视频 was founded in 1847. It comes as the university marks its 175th anniversary.

It also comes more than two years into a COVID-19 pandemic that has rerouted lives and changed many of our daily interactions. Being intentional about embracing kindness within the 杨贵妃传媒视频 community鈥攊ncluding self-care鈥攕ets a tone that we need to celebrate one another as we tackle challenges collectively.

Giveaways will include such things as bubble tea gift cards, snow cones, truffles, and ice cream. There will be chances to share favorite kindness quotes on the sidewalks along Main Hall Green and to take part in yoga and tai chi outdoors.

Hepburn said the 17 Days of Kindness initiative speaks to Carter鈥檚 belief in the importance of leading with kindness.

鈥淭he kindness we demonstrate will inspire us all to think about how our words, thoughts, and deeds impact others, ourselves, and the world,鈥 he said.

Co-captain Herrera on Kenya Earl: 鈥淚 have never heard her brag about herself鈥 /articles/herrera-kenya-earl-i-have-never-heard-her-brag/ /articles/herrera-kenya-earl-i-have-never-heard-her-brag/#respond Tue, 08 Mar 2022 15:30:07 +0000 /articles/herrera-kenya-earl-i-have-never-heard-her-brag/ Kenya Earl and Karina Herrera pose for a photo after Earl broke 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 women鈥檚 all-time scoring record. She would go on to surpass the men鈥檚 record as well.

The post Co-captain Herrera on Kenya Earl: 鈥淚 have never heard her brag about herself鈥 appeared first on 杨贵妃传媒视频.

While all of 杨贵妃传媒视频 has enjoyed the basketball exploits of Kenya Earl since she arrived on campus five years ago, perhaps no one has had a better view of her record-setting run than Karina Herrera. They played together on the women鈥檚 basketball team for four years, shared co-captain duties the past two years, and have developed a close friendship off the court. Herrera, a student writer in the Communications office, sat down with Earl to talk about their journey.

As the end of Winter Term draws near, so do the athletic careers of senior winter sports athletes. I am feeling grateful for so much as my journey as a player and co-captain of the 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 women鈥檚 basketball team has come to an end. I have made many great memories and even better friends.

As I look back at my basketball experiences, there鈥檚 one person in particular I want to talk about. Let it be known that 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 Kenya Earl is a basketball star. But even more so, she is my co-captain and one of my closest friends. I want to take time to honor and share my experiences playing alongside her.

On Feb. 20, we played our last game of the season against Monmouth College. Kenya scored a team-high 15 points, cementing her spot in our school鈥檚 history books as the greatest scorer of all time鈥攎en and women鈥攚ith 1,610 points. It was only a few days before in a home game against Ripon College that she surpassed three-time All American Chris Braier 鈥06, who held the record at 1,565 points.

Kenya Earl plays in her final game on Feb. 20. She finished her career with 1,610 points.

During the game against Ripon, our head coach, Riley Woldt, had called me over to run a play for Kenya because she was only two points away from setting the record. However, she didn鈥檛 need the play because she stole the ball and dribbled up court for a layup.

鈥淚 was definitely a little nervous, but I could tell that you guys were on the bench getting excited, and that鈥檚 what I appreciated,鈥 Kenya told me. 鈥淵ou guys were probably more excited for me to score than I was.鈥

For her fourth and final season鈥攕he returned to 杨贵妃传媒视频 as a fifth-year after her senior season was wiped out in the COVID-19 pandemic鈥擪enya led our team in points, free throws, blocks, and offensive and defensive rebounds. You wouldn鈥檛 know it by how she handles herself. There is no ego. She has always impressed me with her skill and knowledge of the game, but one thing that makes her stand out is how humble she is. I have never heard her brag about herself. Ever.

When I asked her why she doesn鈥檛 boast about herself more, Kenya said, 鈥淚 really don鈥檛 know, to be honest. I just don鈥檛 talk about it a lot. If someone [compliments me] I鈥檒l just smile and say thank you.鈥

During our years playing together, one of our favorite memories would be when we beat St. Norbert College at home during Kenya鈥檚 junior year. We have a lot of history with that school and they were always one of our top rivals. We beat them by one point and it was Kenya who scored the bucket to put us ahead.

鈥淭hat was probably the best game ever that I鈥檝e been a part of here,鈥 Kenya said. 鈥淚t was great, the atmosphere, we had a huge crowd, a lot of fans.鈥

As co-captains, Kenya Earl and Karina Herrera helped build a culture of teamwork and responsibility. 鈥淚 hope they carry on what we鈥檝e done as captains,鈥 Earl said.

One thing Kenya says she鈥檒l miss most is spending time with teammates, and I agree 鈥 all the team meals together, the bus rides, our locker room conversations, our jam sessions, and just funny moments at practice.

鈥淚t sounds cheesy, but people say, 鈥榶ou really won鈥檛 remember the scores of the games like 10 years from now, but you鈥檙e going to remember the little memories that came with it,鈥 Kenya said.

I have learned so much from Kenya, especially working alongside her as co-captain for the last two years. She is a great leader, spokesperson, and role model, and I know I speak for all my teammates when I say that we all look up to her.

As Kenya graduates this year, she leaves behind a legacy for all future players. Not only with her exceptional success on the court, but also with her amazing character.

鈥淗opefully it was something different that they鈥檝e never seen before,鈥 Kenya said of her time as a Viking. 鈥淎lso, with our whole team, I hope they carry on what we鈥檝e done as captains. Just keep the program moving forward.鈥

The names on the list are iconic鈥擝lack leaders, educators, and performers who have helped move the world forward. Each of them has visited 杨贵妃传媒视频 through the years, delivering a speech or performing on the Memorial Chapel stage.

杨贵妃传媒视频 is celebrating 175 years since its founding. As we also celebrate Black History Month during February, we applaud these impressive visitors, who came as convocation or commencement speakers, as sought-after performers, on the presidential campaign trail, or simply as invited guests.

Frederick Douglass, 1866

The famed orator and abolitionist made several stops across Wisconsin in 1866, three years after the Emancipation Proclamation and one year after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. News reports had him making stops in Janesville and then Oshkosh before coming to 杨贵妃传媒视频 for a May 3 speech before the Philalethean Society in Main Hall.听The Crescent听and the听Appleton Motor听reported on his Appleton visit.听The Crescent听called Douglass 鈥渁n eloquent speaker, easy and graceful in manner, withering in sarcasm鈥 and said his speech, titled 鈥淭he Assassination and its Lessons,鈥 was the 鈥渟ame lecture he has been giving so patriotically all over the country.鈥

Booker T. Washington, 1914

Born into slavery, the legendary author and educator would go on to found and lead the Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) and become one of the most influential Black voices in the late 19th century and early 20th century. He came to 杨贵妃传媒视频 to speak in the spring of 1914, one year before his death at age 59.听The Lawrentian听covered Washington鈥檚 speech, saying he 鈥済ave a highly interesting description of his life, his struggle for education, and of the founding and successful growth of the Tuskegee schools.鈥 The student newspaper said Washington 鈥渂rought his address to a close with a plea for a sympathetic understanding between the white and black inhabitants of America.鈥 The paper went on to state: 鈥淒r. Washington was very well received, and leaves a host of friends and admirers in 杨贵妃传媒视频 and Appleton.鈥

Marian Anderson, 1941

The celebrated contralto who paved the way for other Black artists delivered a brilliant concert performance at Memorial Chapel, the overflow audience calling her back for multiple encores. 鈥淣o artist in recent years in Appleton has received the tribute which the audience gave Marian Anderson,鈥澨The Lawrentian听reported. But off campus, Anderson wasn鈥檛 treated as well. Appleton was a 鈥渟undown鈥 town at the time. News reports say Anderson was allowed to stay the night in Appleton鈥檚 Conway Hotel, but she wasn鈥檛 allowed to have dinner in the public dining room. In 2014, 杨贵妃传媒视频 held a concert in tribute to Anderson, recreating the repertoire from her 1941 performance.

Louis Armstrong, 1960

The jazz pioneer nicknamed 鈥淪atchmo鈥 made a late-career visit to 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 Memorial Chapel in the spring of 1960. His appearance pre-dated Ella Fitzgerald鈥檚 concert by a year.听The Lawrentian听previewed Armstrong鈥檚 visit, calling him 鈥渢he greatest of all jazz musicians鈥 and urged the campus community to get their $2 tickets early or risk being left out. 鈥淏ecause of the interest expressed by townspeople and high schools in the area, it seems that the concert will be quickly sold out,鈥 the student newspaper reported. Indeed, it was.

Ella Fitzgerald, 1961

The 鈥淔irst Lady of Song鈥 was a full-on jazz superstar when she performed in concert at Memorial Chapel in early May 1961. She had just earned her fifth and sixth Grammy Awards and would go on to win seven more. Her visit to 杨贵妃传媒视频 was a cross-country stopover between a two-and-a-half-week stand at New York鈥檚 Basin Street East and a three-week engagement at the Crescendo in Los Angeles. 鈥淓lla rocked 杨贵妃传媒视频 College鈥檚 staid, old Memorial Chapel with a battery of upbeat material Tuesday night,鈥澨The Post-Crescent听reported. 鈥淎nd she appeared to enjoy every minute of it. She carried the torch, too, as only she can do. A house just short of capacity couldn鈥檛 have loved the first lady of song more.鈥澨

John Lewis, 1964, 2005, 2015

In June 2015, U.S. Rep. John Lewis returned to 杨贵妃传媒视频 to deliver the Commencement address in the 50th anniversary year of the passage of the Voting Rights Act. It marked the civil rights icon鈥檚 third visit to 杨贵妃传媒视频. He first came to campus in 1964 as head field secretary of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He would return to deliver a Convocation address in Memorial Chapel in 2005. In his 2015 Commencement address, Lewis pledged unity no matter race, religion, or sexual identity. 鈥淲e are one people, we are one family, we are one house,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e are brothers and sisters.鈥

Maya Angelou, 1976 and 1997

Maya Angelou made her first visit to 杨贵妃传媒视频 in 1976. (杨贵妃传媒视频 Archives)

The poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist has been among the most influential voices in America over the past 50 years. She was awarded an honorary degree by 杨贵妃传媒视频 in 1976, seven years after听I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings听drew international acclaim and launched a phenomenal literary career. She would return to campus more than two decades later to deliver a 1997 Convocation address and receive another honorary degree. Her 1993 book of essays,听Wouldn鈥檛 Take Nothing for My Journey Now,听was a mainstay on the听New York Times听best-seller list shortly before her visit. She was greeted by an overflow crowd in Memorial Chapel. A citation presented to Angelou read, 鈥淵our writing, singing, acting, teaching, and your being contribute incredible insight to understandings of the human race, the black race, and the black woman.鈥

Dianne Reeves, 1987 and 2002

The jazz vocalist extraordinaire led a star-studded lineup into the 1987 Jazz Celebration Weekend. She was joined by Dizzy Gillespie and Clark Terry, also icons of jazz. Reeves was early in her career at that point, but she wouldn鈥檛 be overshadowed. She had released her first album in 1981 and had just signed with Blue Note Records in 1987. She was an ascending star, and the audience at Memorial Chapel got an up-close view. She returned for a second visit to Jazz Celebration Weekend 15 years later.

Wynton Marsalis, 1988

The legendary trumpeter was 27 when he came to 杨贵妃传媒视频 in 1988 to perform at Jazz Celebration Weekend. The concert sold out so fast that 杨贵妃传媒视频 officials arranged for a second concert. He met with students while on campus, challenging them to be culturally aware as they pursue music and other studies. 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 research the world of possibilities, you always will accept less,鈥 he told the students, according to听The Post-Crescent. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not a matter of right or wrong; it鈥檚 a question of possibilities.鈥 He wouldn鈥檛 be the only one of the talented Marsalis brothers to perform at 杨贵妃传媒视频. Branford Marsalis played Jazz Celebration Weekend in 2007.

Michelle Obama, 2012

The first lady spoke Sept. 28 at a packed Alexander Gymnasium, a 2012 campaign appearance on behalf of her husband, President Barack Obama, who would be re-elected five weeks later. She is the only sitting first lady to visit 杨贵妃传媒视频, and at the time of her visit was arguably the most popular figure in America. She spoke in Appleton about Obama鈥檚 fight for health care reform despite potential political consequences. 鈥淗e cared that it was the right thing to do,鈥 WHBY Radio quoted her as saying. 鈥淎nd, thankfully, because he fought for health care reform, today our parents and grandparents on Medicare are paying hundreds less for their prescription drugs. 杨贵妃传媒视频 this series: Building Brilliance With 鈥 is a periodic Q&A in which we shine a light on a 杨贵妃传媒视频 staff member whose work helps support 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 students and the university鈥檚 mission.

Brittany Bell, Ed.D., is all about the student journey.

As assistant dean of students and director of the听at 杨贵妃传媒视频, Bell is an important resource for students. In the D&IC, located in Memorial Hall, Bell and her staff provide a welcoming, inclusive, and creative gathering space for students of diverse backgrounds.

She came to 杨贵妃传媒视频 in early 2019 after six and half years on the staff at St. Norbert College, where she served as assistant director of multicultural student services and then student success librarian.

Since arriving at 杨贵妃传媒视频, she has raised the profile of the D&IC, remodeled the space to make it a welcoming place where students can gather, study, and socialize, launched educational programming, and has become a valuable mentor for students and student organizations on campus.

Bell, the mother of three girls with her spouse, Chris, contributed a chapter to the recently published book,听Teaching Beautiful Brilliant Black Girls. It was published by SAGE Publications and came out earlier this year. Her chapter, co-written by Ramycia McGhee, is on colorism in the classroom.

She has a bachelor鈥檚 degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, a master鈥檚 from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and a doctorate from Edgewood College.

Outside of work, Bell and her family operate the De Pere-based God鈥檚 Purpose Apparel, designing and selling clothing and accessories that feature motivational and faith-inspired sayings, with monies being donated to nonprofits serving the homeless community.

We caught up with Bell for a Q&A to talk about her work on campus and what inspires her.

What excites you the most about the work you do with 杨贵妃传媒视频 students?

It鈥檚 getting to know our students, learning more about their stories and aspirations. As I listen, I capture those first moments and then do what I can to support them along their journey. It鈥檚 exciting to do it all over again year after year.

As director of the Diversity and Intercultural Center and assistant dean of students, you play an important role in our students鈥 college journeys beyond the classroom. Why is that so critical to their 杨贵妃传媒视频 experience?

The best way to describe it is I am an ally, mentor, and I serve as a resource for students. Part of my role is leading the Diversity and Intercultural Center (D&IC). The D&IC听is a space where students can come together.听We promote programming that educates and encourages conversation, and celebrations that embrace culture and identity in oneself and others. The space and staff at the D&IC provide an听inclusive environment for students to thrive personally, socially, and academically. An opportunity we鈥檝e created is the Program for Leadership of Underrepresented Students (PLUS), a peer mentoring program that assists students during their first year.

What drew you to a career working in higher education?

My own experience. During my time in college I learned how significant it was to have college leaders and mentors who were supportive during my journey. One day听after completing my internship at a news station,听I remember sitting in my mentor鈥檚 office. It was the end of my junior year, and after the internship experience, I decided I no longer wanted to be a news reporter. I didn鈥檛 know what to do and felt like I had wasted time and money. My mentor sat with me and we talked, and it was that day that I learned that I had options, ones that included me doing what I loved鈥攍etting my light shine bright and helping students through their journey.听

What did the past year and a half鈥攖he pandemic, the social unrest鈥攖each you about the work you and your听staff听do?

The pandemic and social unrest has magnified the importance of all voices being heard. We learned how important it is to invite peers, colleagues, and friends to join us on this journey as we continue work toward creating change in our community.

What is one thing you do away from campus that helps you recharge your batteries or otherwise brings you joy?

One thing I do when I鈥檓 away from campus, besides being with my spouse and children, that brings me joy is when I鈥檓 designing. As an artist, I鈥檓 always amazed by the process from start to finish. I get to listen to the creativity from others and I take their ideas and form it into something wonderful. Since I was 5 years old, art has always been my go-to, and now when I see people wearing apparel or using business projects I鈥檝e designed, it brings me joy knowing I鈥檓 making an impact in multiple ways.

杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 Jes煤s Smith takes to the dance floor for annual Shall We Dance fundraiser /articles/jesus-smith-takes-dance-floor-shall-we-dance/ /articles/jesus-smith-takes-dance-floor-shall-we-dance/#respond Tue, 24 Aug 2021 13:15:13 +0000 /articles/jesus-smith-takes-dance-floor-shall-we-dance/ Jes煤s Smith, assistant professor of ethnic studies, rehearses with Pamela Cribbs at the Boogie Ballroom dance studio in Neenah. Jes煤s Smith is excited to show off his dance moves.

The 杨贵妃传媒视频 assistant professor of ethnic studies is one of eight local community dancers preparing to compete this fall in the Sexual Assault Crisis Center鈥檚 annual Shall We Dance competition in downtown Appleton.

The work of the Appleton nonprofit spoke to Smith in many ways鈥攈e said he鈥檚 felt passionate about sexual assault advocacy since participating in a program called Men Can Stop Rape as an undergraduate at the University of Texas El Paso鈥攁nd saw this fundraiser as a valuable opportunity. So, when the chance to enter the competition appeared, Smith grabbed his dancing shoes.

鈥淚t was a way to tie my passion with the things I do as a scholar and as a professor and make those connections in the community,鈥 he said.

Shall We Dance, built on the same premise as ABC鈥檚 popular series,听Dancing with the Stars, is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Red Lion Hotel Paper Valley. But the all-important fund-raising component and the months of practice and preparation are already in full swing.

Jes煤s Smith said practices have been intense as he prepares for the Oct. 16 competition. 鈥淚t鈥檚 hard, it鈥檚 different,鈥 he said.

Shall We Dance is an entertainment event that aims to increase awareness about sexual assault while helping the Sexual Assault Crisis Center raise important funds. All of the money raised before and during the event will go to the center to help provide needed services to sexual assault survivors.

Each year, eight Fox Cities community dancers are selected to compete. They are paired with various dance organizations and each is matched with a professional dancer. A part of the competition consists of the community dancers raising at least $10,000 for the Crisis Center in the lead-up to the event.

Smith, a member of the 杨贵妃传媒视频 faculty since 2017, is partnered with professional dancer Pamela Cribbs from Boogie Ballroom, a dance studio in Neenah.

Although he never trained formally, Smith said he is confident in his dancing abilities. For him, the hardest part is learning the footwork; he and Cribbs meet about once a week to work on their moves. In between those sessions, Smith is spending a lot of time practicing on his own.

鈥淪o far, it鈥檚 going really fantastic,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 hard, it鈥檚 different. I have these little Cuban dance shoes that have these heels that I swear sometimes are going to break my ankles.鈥

Smith first heard about the competition through a friend, Cristi Burrill, who won it last year. He said he immediately thought that participating in Shall We Dance would be a great opportunity to incorporate what he learned about sexual assault advocacy as an undergraduate in Texas and share it with the Appleton and 杨贵妃传媒视频 communities鈥攁ll the while sweating it out on the dance floor.听听

Smith and the other dancers are currently seeking support while they rehearse in preparation for the dance-off in October.

With his fundraising, Smith said he wanted to take a more educational route to help promote the message of the Crisis Center. He is at the midpoint of hosting four virtual mini educational fundraisers, with discussions concerning different communities鈥 experiences with sexual assault and violence. The sessions include guest speakers. The next Zoom talk will be July 30 with Tommy Curry, a professor of philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, speaking on sexual assault and violence toward racialized boys and men. The final talk will be Sept. 26 and will focus on women, sexism, and surveillance labor with Melissa Ochoa-Garza, a scholar at Texas A&M University. Look for details on Smith鈥檚 social media accounts.

Jes煤s Smith: 鈥淚 wanted to do a song and dance that was reflective of my cultural, ethnic, racial backgrounds.鈥

Smith also created a听听where supporters can watch behind-the-scenes rehearsals and silly videos of him doing various workouts and activities to get into dancing shape.

The competition will include advance voting听) and voting at the Oct. 16 event.

When asked about the specifics of his dance performance, Smith was excited to share. He will be dancing to a Spanish trap song,听A Pal茅, by Rosal铆a.

鈥淚 wanted to do a song and dance that was reflective of my cultural, ethnic, racial backgrounds,鈥 he said.

The song starts slow and beautiful, with Smith and his partner doing a Viennese waltz. It transitions from there as the tempo picks up.

Smith said he wanted to perform a mix of dance styles to match the song and his upbringing, so the performance will include hip-hop, different waltzes, and various Latin-style dances such as cumbias and the Paso Doble, plus other surprises. He aims for their dance to tell a story through both the movements and the costumes.

鈥淚t鈥檚 just such a conglomeration of different things, which I love because it鈥檚 me,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be amazing.鈥
